Shanghai Sevens hosts China performed heroics in going unbeaten to win the women’s Asia-Pacific Sevens title, beating Japan in the final.

The women’s tournament was played alongside the Shanghai Sevens at the Yuanshen Stadium in Pudong and the Chinese won all six of their matches, including a hard-fought pool victory against defending champions Australia, a semi-final win against Samoa and a final energy-sapping victory against their great rivals from Japan.

Australia were using the tournament as a warm-up event for some of their players ahead of the IRB Women’s Sevens World Series, which kicks off with round one at the Emirates Dubai Rugby Sevens and they finished on a high beating Samoa 29-7 to take the plate.

Hong Kong finished strongly to beat Papua New Guinea 27-10 and claim the Bowl.

The day belonged to the hosts China, though, who proved how quickly their development in Rugby Sevens is gathering pace.
