Wheeling Jesuit University Seeks Program Starting Women’s Rugby Coach

Wheeling Jesuit University Women's RugbyThe newest Varsity women’s college program is searching for it’s head rugby coach. The Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals will field its first women’s rugby team next fall semester.

Reporting to the University’s Athletic Director, the Head Women’s Rugby Coach  is responsible for all aspects of a Women’s Rugby program including: recruiting, budgeting, practice and game coaching, supervision of assistant coaches assigned to the program, fundraising, player conditioning, monitoring student-athletes academic progress, alumni and community relations, NCAA compliance and all administrative duties associated with an athletic program.  Identifying with the Jesuit traditions, the university enrolls 1,600 students and is a member of NCAA Division II and the Mountain East Conference.  Wheeling Jesuit University places an emphasis on excellence and integrity in athletics with a focus on academic achievement, athletic success, leadership development, rules compliance, and community service and partnerships.

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s preferred
  • Experience in recruiting, administration and coordination of a collegiate rugby program which focuses on the athletic and academic development of the student athlete
  • Personal and professional integrity including compliance with NCAA regulations
  • Must demonstrate a proven aptitude for coaching as illustrated by a strong work ethic, organizational skills, and the ability to interact professionally with the department, the campus and the rugby community
  • Demonstrable knowledge of the latest technical advances in rugby, particularly concerning strategy and fitness and have an understanding of the national trends in collegiate rugby and current best practices for national and international play
  • Must possess excellent communication skills (verbal and written)

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Responsible for overall management, supervision, and coordination of the University’s rugby program
  • Directly responsible for supervising, hiring and training coaches, graduate assistants, and student workers as well as the on and off field behavior of the student athletes.
  • Responsible for all aspects of the Rugby Program including: recruiting, monitoring academic performance, retention, design and execution of practices, match direction, performance assessment, addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Provide stability and leadership through effective communication of a clear vision and unified purpose.
  • Contribute to the Catholic Jesuit ethos of the institution, the rich intellectual heritage of WJU, and its strong tradition of rugby.
  • Other relevant duties as assigned.
