The World Rugby HSBC Sevens Challenger 2024 is poised to kick off its opening round at The Sevens Stadium in Dubai from January 12 to 14, featuring the participation of 12 women’s and 12 men’s teams. Mirroring the Olympic Games format, the competition spans three rounds, with the top four men’s and women’s teams earning coveted spots in the promotion and relegation play-off competition at the HSBC SVNS 2024 Grand Final in Madrid. This expanded Challenger edition aims to enhance global rugby sevens development, boasting representation from all six World Rugby regions.
In the second season of the Challenger Series in 2022, a format shift to a single tournament in Santiago, Chile took third place. Japan emerged triumphant, defeating Poland 17–0 in the final and securing promotion as a core team for the 2022–23 World Rugby Sevens Series.
The third season in 2023 expanded to two rounds in Stellenbosch, South Africa. South Africa’s victory in the Final over Belgium was close with a scoreline of 17-14 while China secured the third-place position.
Looking ahead, the 2024 edition of the Challenger competition initiates with combined events at The Sevens Stadium in Dubai on January 12-14, followed by Estadio Charrúa in Montevideo, Uruguay on March 8-10. The series culminates with standalone women’s and men’s events at Henryk Reyman’s Municipal Stadium in Krakow, Poland, and Dantestadion in Munich, Germany, respectively, on May 18-19. The HSBC World Rugby Sevens Challenger 2024 promises a dynamic and globally represented competition across multiple venues.
