In the heart of North America, amidst the bustling cities and diverse landscapes, a remarkable sporting sisterhood has emerged, donning the colors of the Philippine flag with pride and purpose. The Magandaquins stand as a testament to the resilience, passion, and cultural heritage of Filipina athletes. Their journey, inspired by a shared desire to represent their roots and forge lasting bonds, unfolds as a narrative of empowerment and possibility.

The genesis of the Magandaquins traces back to the 2022 Asian 7s Series, where a group of Filipina rugby players competing for the Philippine national team found themselves yearning for more than just sporadic international appearances. Led by Erica Legaspi, Lora Mateo, Vanessa Cifuentes, and Lauryn Nazareno, the idea of a dedicated program took root. Their vision was simple yet profound: to create a platform that celebrated their heritage, fostered camaraderie, and honed their athletic prowess beyond the confines of national team tours.

The name “Magandaquins,” derived from the Tagalog word “Maganda,” meaning beautiful, encapsulates the essence of the team. It embodies not only the physical beauty but also the rich tapestry of Filipino culture, cuisine, and tradition. For the founding members, the Magandaquins represent a celebration of their parents’ sacrifices, a validation of their Filipino identity, and a platform to inspire future generations.

Inspired by the success of the Philippines Men’s 7s National Team and heritage teams worldwide, the Magandaquins set out to carve their own path. While drawing inspiration from their male counterparts, they are determined to chart a distinct course toward success. With the support of individuals like Vince Young, founder of the UK Maharlikans, and Jake Letts, Philippines Rugby Football Union (PRFU) General Manager of Performance and Partnerships, the Magandaquins have positioned themselves as a beacon for Filipina rugby talent in North America.

From their debut at the Los Angeles Invitational (LAI) 7s to their recent successes at Stampede 7s in Calgary, the Magandaquins have showcased their skill and spirit on the field. Despite logistical challenges stemming from their diverse geographic locations, the team’s dedication to excellence remains unwavering. As they look ahead to future events the Magandaquins are poised to leave an indelible mark on the global rugby landscape.

Beyond the try lines and trophies, the Magandaquins are committed to fostering community, raising awareness, and advocating for change. Through interviews, museum features, and grassroots outreach, they are amplifying the voices of Filipina athletes and challenging the status quo. By addressing financial barriers through strategic partnerships and grassroots fundraising efforts, they are paving the way for future generations to follow in their footsteps.

At the helm of the Magandaquins stands Win Shortland, a coach with a passion for women’s rugby and a deep appreciation for Filipino culture. His guidance, both on and off the field, has been instrumental in shaping the team’s ethos and fostering a sense of belonging. With Shortland’s support, the Magandaquins are not only honing their skills but also building a legacy that transcends the game itself.

As they gaze into the future, the Magandaquins envision a world where their program flourishes, where Filipina rugby talent thrives, and where heritage teams stand shoulder to shoulder with the giants of the sport. In five years, they aspire to field multiple teams, expand their reach internationally, and nurture the next generation of rugby stars. In a decade, they see themselves as mentors, champions, and champions of change, leaving an enduring legacy for generations to come.

In the grand tapestry of rugby’s global community, the Magandaquins stand as a shining example of what is possible when passion, purpose, and pride converge. With each match, each try, and each triumph, they reaffirm their commitment to their heritage, their sisterhood, and the pursuit of excellence. As the sun sets on one chapter and rises on the next, the journey of the Magandaquins continues, a testament to the power of sport to unite, inspire, and transform lives.
