It is with a heavy heart that we honor the life and legacy of Laurel “Lo” Stender, a true pioneer of the pitch whose adventurous spirit and dedication to rugby have left an indelible mark on our community. This tribute is part of our Pioneers of the Pitch series, dedicated to those who have significantly impacted the world of rugby. Although we celebrate her life posthumously, Lo’s contributions continue to inspire and resonate within the rugby community and beyond.

A Life of Adventure and Dedication

Lo’s journey began in Barstow, California, where she discovered her love for running at an early age. Her athletic prowess earned her a scholarship to run cross country for San Jose State University. It was during her college years that Lo was introduced to rugby, a sport that would become a central part of her life.

Rising to Prominence in Rugby

In 2004, Lo joined the Las Vegas Women’s RFC while pursuing her Masters in Kinesiology at UNLV. Her natural talent and unwavering determination quickly propelled her to the national stage. Within three years of starting her rugby journey, Lo secured a spot on the USA Rugby Eagles 7s roster. She represented the USA in international tournaments in Barbados and Dubai, showcasing her skills and passion on a global platform. Even after retiring from playing, her love for the game saw her transition to the role of a referee, where she continued to contribute to the sport she cherished.

A Gem On and Off the Pitch

Lo was not only a formidable athlete but also a cherished friend and teammate. Her infectious positivity and genuine love for life made her a beacon of joy for everyone around her. She lived every moment to the fullest, embodying the true spirit of adventure. Whether she was canyoneering, backpacking, running ultra-marathons, or exploring the desert on her ATV, Lo’s courage and enthusiasm were inspirational.

Impact Beyond Rugby

Lo’s influence extended far beyond the rugby pitch. She served as the athletic trainer for Cerro Coso Community College since 2016, where her light and energy touched the lives of countless athletes and colleagues. Her dedication, flexibility, and kindness were evident in every aspect of her work and interactions.
