The Las Vegas Slots defeated the Santa Monica Dolphins in the SCRFU Division 2 championship match 31-0, on May 12th. The match was held in Las Vegas, NV at Acacia Park.
This is the first division championship for the Las Vegas Slots who were established in 2001. The Slots finished the 2011 regular season undefeated but fell to Santa Monica in the championship game of the playoffs by one kick. Santa Monica finished the 2012 season undefeated after beating Las Vegas in the first game of the season by 5 points.
“This is a great win and championship for our team. We were a little disappointed after losing at Santa Monica in our first game of the season by such a close score. But we were confident all season that we’d be able to capitalize on our team’s strengths and get the win come playoffs time,” said Jenny Kramer, team president.
Slots starting inside center, Khristy Gaines was elated after the victory, “We’ve come so far and this is our moment!”
Despite the second place finish in division standings after the regular season, the Slots managed to put up 238 points in just five games (an average of 47.6 points scored against opponents, while only allowing an average of 5.4 points against them.)
“We have great scoring assets in the Gaines sisters, Laurel Stender, and the rest of our team, really. We had a lot of forward positions scoring this season that don’t traditionally get to the try zone as often as others. Especially Jeruscha Ako, she’s been unstoppable. But, in addition to scoring Coach Phil has stressed discipline on defense and I think it’s shown.”
The Slots are coached by Phil Klevorick and Rob Fugate. They will represent the Southern California Rugby Union’s Division 2 at Nationals this fall.
