2015 – 2016 Women’s Sevens World Series Rugby

2015 – 2016 Women’s Sevens World Series RugbyNine months out from rugby sevens’ debut at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games the pools and match schedule have been announced for the opening round of the new HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series, in Dubai on December 3-4, 2015.

While most are excited about the tournament and the new sponsorship of HSBC, the event annoucement has been marred by the reduction of stops for the women. Previously at six, this year only has four spots. Two of the host cities from last season, London and Amsterdam, are absent from the current schedule. World Rugby has indicated that a fifth spot has potential, but noting concrete has been announced.

Players have taken to social media to display their frustration, especially since the men had stops added to their schedule. This all seems counterintuitive to the commitment that World Rugby has claimed for women’s rugby. Here’s to hoping additional stops are added and soon…after all, it’s the year BEFORE the Olympics…the best time for preparation is NOW.
