Norwich Rugby Wins Over Rutgers to Advance to the USA Rugby National Championships in April 2010

from Times Argus:

NORHFIELD – The Norwich women’s rugby team rolled to a 42-3 victory over Rutgers on Sunday, allowing the Cadets to end the season with an 11-0 league record.

The Cadets, who claimed their third Northeast Championship in four years, opened the scoring less than a minute into the game. Junior wing Unna Lee accounted for the first try of the match, and 10 minutes later classmate Alicia Seda pounded her way in for her first of four tries on the day. Seda’s tries give her a team-leading 19 on the season – 10 of which came in the last three playoff games.

Norwich captain and center Clarissa Wynn easily scored a try midway through the first half, giving her 15 on the season. Wynn also recorded one successful conversion, moving her to the top of NU’s all-time Norwich scoring list with 282 career points. Wynn was also selected as the 2009 Northeast Championships MVP.

Sophomore flyhalf Katie Gingras and classmate Caroline Bell added additional tries in the second half, marking the second try of the fall season for both players.

“It’s been a truly unbelievable experience to work with these players,” Norwich coach Austin Hall. “I am so fortunate to be a part of this opportunity as these players give everything they have to the success of the team. They are outstanding rugby players, but their smiles and their positive energy are really what set them apart.”

The Cadets will advance to the USA Rugby National Championships in April. They will enter the tournament as the No. 2 seed in the nation.
