Guyana Successfully Defends Rugby Sevens crowns

from Kaieteur News:

Guyana Men’s and Women’s Rugby teams successfully defended their Sevens crowns in Mexico yesterday after, as they did on opening day Saturday, played unbeaten to keep a stranglehold on regional Sevens Rugby.

The Guyana men faced a stern test from Trinidad and Tobago in their final, but showed that they were made of championship material, edging the Twin Island Republic 12-10 in that encounter.

They had opened with quarter-final play against Bermuda, running out 28-19 winners against spirited opposition. They made light work of the semi-final against The Bahamas, brushing them aside 24-0. Kevin McKenzie was instrumental in guiding Guyana in the final. They have now qualified for the Las Vegas World event in February next year.

Meanwhile, the ladies marched to victory in their round robin format with a clean slate.

The romped home with convincing wins against The Bahamas 48-0, host Mexico 27-0, Cayman Islands 26-0 and St Lucia 26-0. Tricia Munroe stood out as she led with her experience for the Guyanese ladies.
