WPL Week 5: Amazons vs Furies – Match Report by John Reed + Video

Sunday, October 24, 2010 11:00, Minneapolis’s Columbia Heights Park
Cloudy, damp, calm but unseasonably warm

Final: Amazons 46 Furies 20

The Amazons came out firing with splendid back play supplied by impressive pack play; a season theme but worth mentioning. They totaled 24 unanswered points by the end of the first half. One of many highlights featured fullback, Ashley Mulford on a long break, pooch, scoop and score that measured about 70 meters.

The second half began as the first half ended with backs running and passing to space. Within the first 10 minutes, the Zons built its lead to 34-0.

The Furies had their own scoring opportunities throughout but were foiled by a combination of tenacious defense and the dreaded unforced error. But after a red card at the 55-minute mark sent Amazon flanker, Amanda Kingzett, off for a dangerous tackle, the D.C. visitors were able to capitalize. Swinging it wide, they found their top-shelf wing, Ida Berstein, who converted three long scoring movements with a try sprinkled in off a textbook five-meter scrum. Number eight, Kelly Clerkin, completed the play.

The combination of Rebecca Radtke to Silvia Braaten to Lynelle Kugler to Kaelene Lundstrum to Liz Dusbabek to Mulford (and not necessarily in that order) accounted for all but one score by the Zons. Prop Rachel Maas touched one down for the pack.

Injuries did neither side favors with a prop from each side leaving for good. Henrietta Hogberg left in the 15th minute with a shin injury for the Amazons being replaced by Tonnie Wulff and Tiffany Smith left during the 39th minute with a knee for the Furies being replaced by Jocelyn Richards. Radtke eventually earned 14 facial stitches for her troubles but was able to return after a quality mop job by the very able medical staff to begin the second half.

And, now, matches at Berkeley and Beantown await the Furies and Amazons, respectively, to close out an eventful and incredibly close regular season for these four teams.
