from USA Rugby:
USA Rugby is proposing an exciting new member benefit for the upcoming membership cycle and we want to know what you think.
The proposed benefit will provide accident insurance to ALL registered USA Rugby members.
This policy will provide $25,000 of accident coverage AND a $250,000 catastrophic plan upon registration with USA Rugby. This plan will cover injuries incurred during rugby events and practice, as well as travel to and from those events.
If you have primary insurance, this policy will cover your out-of-pocket costs for any rugby injury. We all know injuries can happen while playing, this added member benefit will greatly reduce the financial risk that can be associated with those injuries.
In order to provide this new benefit, USA Rugby’s annual membership dues would be increased by $10 per person.
USA Rugby hopes this benefit will provide members with peace of mind on the field and also become a compelling recruiting tool. One great feature of the plan is that all members will be covered regardless of whether or not they have primary insurance coverage.
We are looking for your feedback. We want your voices to be heard. We urge you to contact your Territorial Union Representative on the USA Rugby Congress with your opinion. Let them know if you are in favor of this new benefit.
Please contact your Congress Representative (listed below) by July 15 so they can vote according to their constituents’ desires.
For $10 per person, this policy will provide:
- $25,000 per injury resulting from sanctioned rugby events, including training, matches and travel to and from sanctioned rugby events
- $1,000 disappearing deductible for members with primary insurance (Disappearing deductible means that this plan will cover your out-of-pocket expense from your primary insurance)
- $2,500 deductible for members without primary insurance
- $250,000 Excess Catastrophic Medical Expense Benefit
- 24 Hour Rugby Accident Protection

$2,500 deductible. That is a joke! Most accidents are under $1,000. It’s worthless coverage unless you break multiple bones, break your neck, or slip into a coma. If you have one of those listed, then your bill is usually going to push you over the $25,000 mark. With only $1,000,000 in premium ($10 x 100,000 members), only a few large claims at the premium will exceed the money raised. I wouldn’t write that policy nor hedge my capital on that working out.
