An Overview of the Drexel University Women’s Rugby Club:

Founded in 1999, the Drexel University Women’s Rugby Club has grown tremendously over the last eleven years. Some of the most recent accomplishments of the club include:

  • EPRU Division IV Champions – November 2009
  • National Division IV Champions – November 2009
  • EPRU Division III Champions – November 2010
  • Runner-up National Division III Champions – November 2010

Recently, the club acquired its own home field at the Drexel University Vidas Athletic Complex, where we have a regulation sized pitch and semi-permanent regulation uprights installed. In April 2008, Drexel Women’s Rugby hosted our first home game against Muhlenberg University, winning 34-0. Since then our club has been successful in defending our home territory, and we look forward to hosting all our homes games in the 2011 competitive fall season.

Furthermore, the Drexel University Women’s Rugby Club has also taken a more active role in both the Drexel University community and in the rugby community. Our players not only regularly participate on the team, but they also volunteer their time throughout the year. The club participates in annual events at Drexel, such as Inspire a Child to Dream Day and Relay for Life.

Over the last year, our club has also made significant contributions to the rugby community. In February 2011, we hosted our First Annual High School Rugby Clinic for high school girl’s teams in the EPRU; we had over 75 students attend and participate in the clinic. In June 2011, we are hosting the USA Sevens Women’s Collegiate Championship games at the Vidas Athletic Complex.

The members of the team come from a variety of athletic backgrounds, where a few played at the high-school level and the majority joins the team with no prior experience; however, everyone shares the desire to improve their understanding of the game of rugby and have fun. We look forward to working with a new coach who can help us achieve these goals.
