Celebrate International Women’s Day

International Women’s Day (IWD), is marked on March 8 every year. Everyday at Your Scrumhalf Connection we celebrate women rugby players…but its nice to see a day of celebrating women in general. Sadly, I am still at work today, didn’t my boss get the memo that this is a Holiday!?

I’ve found a few Rugby specific events (and some history) dedicated to celebrating IWD…

  • YSC Rugby has is offering 10% off on tshirts, balls and more to celebrate IWD, check it out here. Your support enables this website to keep going!
  • The  Australian Rugby Union today officially launched a new Women’s Sevens video aimed at encouraging young women to take up the fast, fun and exciting Olympic Sport. Watch the video here.
  • International Women’s Day (IWD), originally called International Working Women’s Day, is marked on March 8 every year.[1] In different regions the focus of the celebrations ranges from general celebration of respect, appreciation and love towards women to a celebration for women’s economic, political and social achievements. • On March 8, 1997, on International Women’s Day, the first women rugby match in took place Florianopolis (island in south of Brazil). [Wikipedia]
  • Like coffee and rugby? Caldecott Park in the UK is hosting a drop-in coffee morning event to gather views and ideas from the public about the possibility of a new centre for women. Since this is in the UK, its already happened. But cool nonetheless!
  • Huddersfield Giants vs St Helens Clash (Rugby League in the UK) will be hosting a variety of activities around women and girls involvement with the club and rugby league as a sport to help recognise this global celebration. With around half of all rugby league fans being female and the proud family nature of the sport, the game on Sunday will be the ideal backdrop to celebrate International Women’s Day.
  • PLAY rugby, become miners, broker peace in conflict zones and don’t post nude videos of other people. Wait, what? Read more here.
  • World Rugby Shop is hosting a women’s week where all purchases are elgibile for 15% off.
  • The Rugby Football League is celebrating International Women’s Day today (March 8) by profiling a selection of women involved in Rugby League in this country and highlighting the opportunities that exist for women at all levels of the sport.
Sadly, nothing from USA Rugby yet on celebrating this important day…

Get out there and celebrate women’s rugby by inviting someone to play our sport!

  1. This is great! In line with IWD, can you feature an article about why CRC 7s dropped the women’s bracket even though they played much better rugby than the men’s bracket? Yeah yeah, the men make people come out, but the Women made the whole tournament come alive!
