NOTE: Women’s college teams may contend for a berth in the 2012 7‘s National Championship via either Automatic Qualification or At-Large Qualification. Automatic Qualification is gained by winning a 7s Tournament designated as a “Qualifying Event” during Fall 2012. Once the Automatic Qualifier teams are determined, teams seeking At-Large Qualification must make application to USA Rugby for one of
the At-Large spots. Click on the link above for more details…

How is this possibly okay? Norwich and Life should be receiving automatic invitations by being the defending champs. As to qualifying – this is exceptionally punitive to smaller schools. Norwich plays 15s in the fall. The date of the championship alone is a challenge for any team with a fall 15s schedule, much less one without deep pockets. Who will fund the trips to find a “qualifying” tournament. To be perfectly honest, I think the top three teams for Men and top three for Women from the previous tournament earned the right to an invite for the following year.
I am really struggling to see the logic from USA Rugby on this. It seems to benefit regions rather than what is best for the sport(s) to grow in ALL areas of the country.
