USA Rugby Assembles Women’s 7s Developmental Team for NASC 7s

from USA Rugby:

USA Rugby has assembled a developmental team for the Women’s National All-Star Championship (NASC) 7s on August 17-18, 2012, in Chula Vista, Calif. The team is composed of players in the Women’s National Team depth chart based on their performances over the past year.

The Women’s National Team 7s Head Coach Ric Suggitt is confident the women will play well together even though they come from different programs across the country.

“There are not many challenges bringing a team like this together,” Suggitt said. “All eight teams competing at the NASC are representative teams, so we are on an equal playing field. Having access to the Olympic Training Center (OTC) should give a huge home field advantage to this young squad.”

The NASC tournament is structured by having two pools of four teams compete on the first day, with the championship played on the second day.

“If things go our way, we hope to play six games and be in the final on Saturday afternoon,” Suggitt said.
Suggitt predicts Bui Baravilala will be a strong team captain, as she is a Women’s National Team contracted player who trains at the OTC full time and is a calm, poised and explosive player.

This is the third year of the developmental squad and the program has had quality players come through it.

“In our first two years we have had Bui, Kaelene (Lundstrum), Deven (Owsiany) and Kimber (Rozier) on this squad and now they are resident contracted players,” Suggitt said. “Our goal will be to repeat that depth every year. This will build a competitive peer-to-peer competition.”
