WPL Match Summary & Video – Twin City Amazons vs Beantown – Alicia Gillberg

Amazons hold Strong in Tough Forward Battle

Every time the Amazons and Beantown square off it is a sure bet for a huge forward battle, this weekend’s match was no different. All of the fans lined up on the sidelines of the game, a part of the opening day of the All Minnesota Tournament, would agree that it was a clash with both opponents strong in their own part of the game.

The 10 o’clock match had perfect fall weather, nice and cool and sunny, with only a varying east to west wind to throw off hookers and kickers.

The game started with a kickoff from Sylvia Braaten to open up the WPL season. Some quick defensive pressure and good forward work gave the Zons a forward drive down the field then off to the back line for a score from Lynelle Kugler and a good conversion kick from Desiree Markovich. Zons drive down the field again, kicking within the Beantown 22 for a lineout resulting in another try and good conversion for the Zons. Another break in open play for the Amazons through the Beantown defense leads to a 3rd try for the Zons.

It would only be a matter of time however before Beantown’s consistent scrummaging would shine through. The entire game so far had been filled with strong scrum showings from Beantown. When the ball was under the scrum, it was most likely being won by the Blue and Red, and they used this to their advantage, walking in a try to get on the board and make the game 21-7. Some more strong play and well planned set-pieces kept Beantown with momentum for some time until the Zons ended the half with a quick outside try from winger Kayla Finn. Half ends 28-7.

The 2nd half started off well for Beantown, they kept the momentum gained in the first half and continued to control the set-piece play. Then Beantown sent a long kick into Amazon territory, chased down by Flicka and ran all the way in to the try zone, score now 28-14. The Zons, unhappy with the momentum change, took back the game with stronger open field play, returning fire with a turnover and breakaway run for another try by Lynelle, followed by another to end the game 38-14.

The Amazons travel to take on Keystone next week while Beantown hosts the DC Furies.
