New York Rugby Club (NYRC) hosted the San Diego’ Surfers on Randall’s Island this past weekend.  Ultimately, the Surfers gleaned their first win of the season in the physical contest that featured numerous penalties on both sides.

The Surfers struck first, moving the ball out quickly and setting their wing up for a long sideline run that resulted in a converted try. NYRC then answered, with a try originating in the backs, making the score 7-5 Surfers. This 2-point difference was soon widened, however, as the Surfers utilized their back line to manipulate gaps and a slow defensive launch on NYRC’s part. The Surfers would send four more players over the line before half, making the score 29-5 Surfers at the halftime whistle.

The second half saw some forward momentum from NYRC, who were able to overcome earlier errors in handling and ball retention to send two players over the line for two converted tries. However, San Diego held strong to their strategy of zig-zagging up the field until a defensive mismatch occurred and then exploiting that mismatch with speed and strong handling skills. At the final whistle, the score was 45-19 Surfers. The two teams will meet again in San Diego on October 28th.
