imageCanada’s Under 20 Women’s National Team unseated the three-time defending champion side from England 43-15 to move to 2-0.

Canada received tries from five different players including two from Emily Belchos in the second half to shock the English side.

Canada jumped out to a 19-0 lead in the first half thanks to tries from Emily Barber, Daria Keane and Natalie Lesco and strong kicing from Jess Neilson.

“We talked about this after the game,” said head coach Sandro Fiorino. “What a day for these girls and their rugby career. It doesn’t happen that often that you beat one of the best teams in the world convincingly.”

Canada ran into some trouble midway thorough the game when they were handed two yellow cards, putting them down for the first part of the second half. Despite the challenge of playing with only thirteen players, Canada regrouped after allowing a few tries to England and reinforced their level of offence.

Second-half tries from Belchos and Breanne Nicholas propelled Canada to their final score of forty-three points over a strong English side.

“The forwards committed to being a physical component of our game,” commented Fiorino. Fiorino was impressed with the play of prop DaLeaka Menin who won’t show up on the score sheet but played a solid physical game for Canada.

The victory for Canada is England’s second loss in as many games after England dropped a close 24-22 game to South Africa on Thursday.

The victory sets up a potential championship preview on Wednesday. Depending on the result of the Unites States and South Africa. Canada and South Africa will square off with a chance at a rematch a week from now in the Under 20 Women’s Nations Cup Championship game.
