USA Eagles UK Tour vs England – Round 1

USA Rugby UK TourThe USA Women’s National Team played their second match of their pre Women’s Rugby World Cup UK Tour against England yesterday. It was a closed affair and is being called a  “training scrimmage”. Both teams used the game as a learning experience before Saturday’s full test match between the two countries. It was four 20min periods with different roster combinations for each period. An unofficial score of England 48 USA 0 has been recorded.

England and the USA have a long rivalry in women’s rugby, dating back to the 1991 World Cup Final, won by the USA, and the 1994 World Cup Final, won by England.

You could argue that England is the closest team to challenge the four time World Cup Champions, New Zealand. While USA has finished well the last few years, 5th place over Canada in 2010 was especially sweet. If the USA wants to compete with the best, they have to play the best.

The two teams have another match on the horizon, this time a full test match on July 6 in Surrey. England and USA will look to continue mixing it up as they prepare for the World Cup in August.
