Central Washington Suffers 12-32 Loss to Canada’s University of Victoria

With less than a week of practice under their belt, the Central Washington University women’s rugby team travelled to Canada to take on The University of Victoria Thursday afternoon, and fell to the Vikes 12-32.

“U Vic is a great Canadian side; physical, smart, and skilled,” CWU Head Coach Mel Denham said.  “This game provided a great opportunity to see where we are as we start off the new season.”

The Wildcats feel behind 17-0 in the first half before freshman center Suiluana A’au broke the try line to get the Wildcats on the board.  Leah Ingold nailed home the conversion to cut the Vikes lead to 17-7 entering halftime.

We started a pair of freshman (A’au and Kat Truong), and they stepped right up to the pace of the game, which was good to see,” Denham added.  “I would also say that Ingold and Sammy Pinson really played well all match.”

The Wildcats second try of the day came from Yana Manoa late in the second half, as the Vikes defeated the Wildcats 32-12.

“Defensively we played well and showed our physicality and technique at the tackle,” Denham added.”  We also had a good shape on attack, but were unable to get the go forward ball necessary to put stress on their defense and create opportunities.”
