Sophie Pyrz: Writing Her Rugby Destiny

From a small town in Doylestown, PA, Sophie Pyrz’s journey in sports ignited at the young age of 3 with swimming and soccer. Eventually, her passion for soccer blossomed into a love for rugby. Influenced by her parents’ unwavering support and her older brother’s athletic pursuits, Sophie’s path as an athlete was shaped by hard work, determination, and a drive to prove herself.

Sophie’s early sports experiences were diverse, ranging from swimming to track & field, and even cross country. She learned the value of hard work, teamwork, and the importance of never giving up, no matter the challenges. Her upbringing instilled values that guided her pursuit of a rugby career.

A defining moment came when Sophie was unexpectedly cut from her soccer team due to her size. Determined to prove her soccer coach wrong, she embraced rugby as a way to showcase her resilience and physicality. Her parents’ emphasis on hard work and her father’s example of dedication inspired her to excel in rugby despite her size.

Currently training with Rhinos Rugby, Sophie’s regimen involves intense field and gym sessions. She also values mental preparation, having learned essential skills at ARPTC with Jules McCoy. On game days, she reviews the plan, focuses with headphones on, and trusts in her training.

Sophie’s journey wasn’t without setbacks—rejections, injuries, and doubts—but she never let them define her. A memorable moment was when she was playing for Life University during the 2001 XVs National Championship game with Penn State, she chased down an opponent to prevent a last-minute try. It reinforced that every minute on the field is an opportunity to shine.

Sophie envisions a growing future for rugby in the USA, especially for women. Her goal is to become a USA National Team athlete, and she’s dedicated to pushing her limits and working on her skills. Beyond rugby, she aspires to work in leadership consulting, coaching, or within rugby organizations.

Sophie’s impressive sporting accolades include being a 3-time U23 All-American, a member of the USA XVs training pool in 2023, earning a spot on the 2022 PR7s season Dream Team, being a part of the 2021 USA 7s developmental academy, and achieving the honor of a 2-time College XV National Champion.

As a rising star, Sophie Pyrz’s journey showcases the power of determination and the joy of embracing challenges. Her love for rugby, family support, and commitment to growth make her a true inspiration for athletes everywhere.
