In the heart of Ohio, in the small village of Troy, Hali Deters began her sporting journey at the tender age of 5 with soccer, a passion ignited by her admiration for soccer legend Mia Hamm. Growing up in a rural community with limited social interactions, sports became the gateway for Hali to connect with others, shaping her early experiences and laying the foundation for her athletic pursuits.

A move to New Jersey during her formative years brought about a significant change, with sports serving as Hali’s anchor in a new and unfamiliar environment. Track and field became a prominent part of her life, and it was during this time that a coach’s suggestion planted the seed for her future in rugby. However, it wasn’t until her undergraduate years that Hali answered the call to rugby, and it was love at first sight.

Now residing in Kirkland, WA, and practicing as a chiropractor, Hali’s sporting journey is multifaceted, marked by triumphs, challenges, and a deep connection to the game of rugby. Playing for various clubs, including Glendale Raptors and Life West, Hali has achieved several rugby national championships and secured a spot in the PR7s selection for 2023.

Balancing a demanding career as a chiropractor with her passion for rugby requires meticulous time management. Hali’s training regimen involves touch rugby, strength training, and rehabilitation, coupled with mental exercises such as breathwork and visualization. Her commitment to maintaining peak physical and mental fitness reflects her dedication to both her profession and her athletic pursuits.

Hali’s resilience shines through when facing setbacks, epitomized by her journey to join the Women’s Premier League (WPL) with the Life West club. Overcoming challenges and setbacks, such as not initially making the PR7s teams, Hali’s mindset of focusing on the “next job” has propelled her forward, leading to unexpected opportunities and achievements.

Reflecting on her career, Hali holds a particularly memorable moment close to her heart—the emotional victory against DC Furies with Life West, securing their place in the WPL. The adversity faced by her team, fighting for each other and the future of women’s rugby, remains an indelible chapter in her sporting story.

Looking ahead, Hali envisions a future where rugby evolves into larger, more inclusive clubs with various competition tiers. As she transitions away from playing rugby, Hali plans to venture into coaching women’s rugby, starting as an assistant coach at the University of Washington.

Beyond rugby, Hali’s love for sports persists, as she plans to compete in more touch rugby tournaments, USA touch nationals, and explore other athletic pursuits like volleyball, rock climbing, and pickleball. A lifelong athlete, Hali sees herself staying deeply connected to the world of sports even after her contact rugby days are over.

In the ever-evolving narrative of Hali Deters, her story continues to unfold, marked by passion, perseverance, and an unwavering commitment to the diverse world of sports.
