Guest Blog from TrueFitness: Go All Out

So now you know the exercises to do and the exercises that we think are a waste of time. This week we want to discuss wasting our time in a different manner. We will be discussing how we waste our time with a lack of effort. Effort means almost everything. It is generally the person who works harder that will win out in the end. Natural ability is great but I will take effort. Effort will never let you down. It will always be there doing its best to win the game. So effort is very important in sports and game performance.

It is very easy to waste training sessions and workouts if an athlete does not give all out effort. Remember back to the overload principle which roughly states that one must always do more than they did last time in order to cause change which in this case is improved sports performance. This means that one must always be doing more and that means the effort must be there to push an athlete to their limit and earn improvement.

Improvements are earned after all. Effort is the way that we go about earning improvement. When we train we need to give our all out effort to ensure that we are getting better. This means working to fatigue on every set and giving everything we have during each session as we prepare for the upcoming season. The consequences of not giving our best effort are defeat and poor performance. Neither one of those outcomes are acceptable in an athletes life.

End each workout with the statement, “Did I give my all today?” and if the answer is yes than you can be content knowing the answer. If the answer is no then you are not done with your training session or workout. Get back to what you were doing and leave everything out there.

But, get one thing straight, this does not mean that a training session has to last three hours in order to earn improvement. If effort is given on every set and every rep with every exercise then there is no minimum or maximum amount of time consideration. Time is not a factor as is number of sets, exercises, reps, etc. if all out effort is given.

Effort will lead to the improvements that an athlete needs and desires. With maximum effort an athlete will most likely overcome any short comings in natural ability. When an athlete with the most natural ability also has the greatest work ethic that is when you have an athlete who will be remembered as one the sports best. Michael Jordan, Albert Pujols, Wayne Gretzky, Peyton Manning, Gareth Edwards or Jonny Wilkinsons all had the most talent but all of them all worked harder than everyone else to not waste one ounce of their natural talent and to make sure that they would maximize their talents and by giving their all out effort they each became a legend in their respective sport.

Do all that you can to be your best and when your playing days are done you can look back at the games and seasons and know that you left nothing in the tank and truly gave your best effort.

I will end with a quote from noted sports performance coach Peter Twist. “Today I will give everything I have, what I keep inside I will lose forever.”
