Transition for Youth Rugby in Minnesota

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Minnesota Amateur Rugby Foundation (MARF) is pleased to announce their transition to Minnesota Youth Rugby (MYR).  As the official State Based Rugby Organization (SBRO) in Minnesota, the board of directors recently voted to re-brand MARF and align the organization more closely with the leading SBRO’s around the country.  The name change signifies a renewed enthusiasm to expand the organization’s mission of supporting youth through rugby. Since the foundation’s inception in 1984 MARF has focused on growing the sport in the United States and in the last 5 years has focused specifically on high school league organization and Rookie Rugby — a non-contact form of the game for ages 5 through 13.

With the addition of rugby to the 2016 Olympics, the sport has seen significant growth around the country. Minnesota Youth Rugby has capitalized on this interest as it has already reached over 10,000 students around the state, and continues to organize Minnesota junior and high school rugby with over 6 leagues and hundreds of participants.  Recently, USA Rugby approved contracts for eight fulltime female athletes who will join the men’s professional program and represent the USA at the Olympics.  Thus the commitment to rugby’s potential in the United States is measurable and can be seen from the national level to the local and community levels.

Minnesota Youth Rugby looks forward to several upcoming events, including a chance to host a USA Rugby certification weekend in March, a Serevi Camp the following weekend,  and education programs estimated to reach over 25 schools in 2012.   MYR is working to expand their partnerships with local organizations and schools in 2012 while continuing a commitment to the expansion of MY Junior League and MY High School League.
