D1 Club Week 1 (Week 2 for some teams) Summary, Results & Standings

The first week (really 2 weeks, CR2 starts really early!) of the Women’s D1 Club League is done! While there are limited details regarding match specifics, I’m going to try and do weekly updates. Unofficially we have heard that the seeds for USAR D1 Championships are being “rotated” and not awarded based on performance. So CR1 will have 2 seeds, CR2 3 seeds and CR3 3 seeds. This is UNCONFIRMED and I am awaiting a response from USAR on this.  UPDATED 2:32pm: Just heard back from USAR, the seeds are not being “rotated” but CR1 lost a seed due to their performance.

DISCLAIMER: I check the standings and results of each CR on Mondays, if the info hasn’t been updated quickly, I can’t report on it.

CR1
The action in CR1 is just getting underway with Nor Cal Triple Threat having two games under their belt. Everyone else in the league only has one game so far (that is reported). Even though Seattle narrowly defeated Nor Cal on Saturday, Nor Cal leads the league with one win and one loss (bonus point for staying within 7 points of Seattle). Hard to say who will stay on top in this league, but my money is on ORSU or Seattle Breakers. Hard to make a call at this point due to the limited games that have been played.

UPDATED 11:33am: A few more results for CR1 have come in, updating the standings and results now.

CR2
This league went from seven teams to six when the St. Louis Sabres were removed (forfeitures). The first week of action was 8/25 with the Austin Valkyries defeating Black Ice 41-27 and Detroit defeated Chicago 27-7. Week 2 action was just this last weekend…the Valkyries and Chicago were both off while Black Ice defeated the Minnesota Valkyries 29-14 and Chicago NS stomped Detroit 33-5.  It seems clear that Chicago NS will continue to top this league with spots two and three in hot contention. We’ve heard that the Minnesota Valkyries are rebuilding and recovering from their time in the WPL, they are also without their longtime coach Barb Fugate as she focuses on family.

CR3
With three seeds (unconfirmed) in the running for CR3, the tops teams can relax just a bit, but need to be careful to not relax completely. NOVA stands on top of the league currently with wins over Philly and Boston. Boston has come out strong this season with a big win over Providence 33-19 in the first week of competition. We would expect Atlanta to continue their strong tradition, but our money is on NOVA to top the league this year. If Boston can keep up the good work, they may be the third team come November. Lots of rugby to come though!

  1. Is this supposed to be recent standings? Nor Cal beat SF Fog last weekend 42-19 and after leading almost the entire match, narrowly lost to Seattle Breakers this Saturday 24-26.
