2015 Collegiate Rugby Championships – Expanded to 12 Women’s Teams

2015 Penn Mutual Collegiate Rugby Championships

We’ve been pretty critical about the Collegiate Rugby Championship and how they handle any competition that isn’t the Collegiate Men. In the past the men have had incredible support including all matches in the Stadium, access to elite match officials, meals, premium hotels,  jersey assistance, off-field wear and more. The women’s teams have played off site (sometimes up to 45 mins away) and paid through the nose including having to sell tickets to matches in the stadium. How hard is it to sell tickets to matches that you won’t get to see (unless you buy yourself a ticket) or that your team won’t be playing in? True the women’s final has been in the stadium the last two years but is that good enough?

There is some hope on the horizon as it was announced that the women’s matches will be on-site, but not in the actual stadium. The press releases are written just right by saying “[We’ve] moved all games in the tournament (pool rounds on Friday, knock-out rounds on Saturday, consolation and championship final on Sunday) to PPL Park”. They don’t mention that the matches won’t actually be IN PPL Park, but adjacent at the Academy Fields. I think we can all agree that this is better but lets forget the word games?

In other good news they’ve expanded the women’s field from eight teams to twelve. Matches will take place on Friday, May 29th, Saturday, May 30th and Sunday, May 31st. The Quarters, Semis, Consolation and Championship matches will be played in the stadium. Participating teams include Penn State, American International College, Arizona, Boston University, University of Delaware, James Madison University, Kutztown, Life, Lindenwood, Michigan, Notre Dame College, and the University of Notre Dame.

Lastly, the new sponsorship with Penn Mutual is paying off as they are providing 11 of the 12 women’s teams competing in this year’s tournament with full, new kit.

Penn State’s women’s rugby team is the defending, consecutive two-time women’s champion of the CRC, capturing the 2013 and 2014 titles.  The tournament will be a round robin with three pools of four teams that play three matches each on Friday. For the eight teams that do not qualify for the Cup bracket, they will be funneled into the Challenge Cup and contest their quarterfinal and semifinal matches Saturday, and finals Sunday. The Cup knockouts (and two additional Challenge quarterfinal matches) will be contested inside PPL Park (Chester, Pa.).

Girls High School

There will also be a Girls High School Championship that includes 16 teams including Doylestown (Pennsylvania); Berkshire (Massachusetts);Blaze (New Jersey); South Texas; North Texas; Kiski (Pennsylvania); Downingtown (Pennsylvania); Summit (Colorado); DSHA (Wisconsin); West Shore (Pennsylvania); North Penn (Pennsylvania); and West Chester (Pennsylvania).

Pool play in the HSRC will be on Friday, May 29th from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the University of Pennsylvania, with pool play continuing on Saturday, May 30th at PPL Park, with the semi-finals and finals on Sunday, May 31st at PPL Park.

Broadcast

None that we know of for either the Collegiate Women or High School Girls, in the past they haven’t even shown OR mentioned the women’s match on NBC or Universal Sports.

  1. A little context about this post, I’ve attended the CRC three times, once as a spectator, as a team Coach (University of Texas women’s 7s) and as a match official.

UT was asked to return as their men attend every year but we declined multiple times because the women were treated as second class. You’ll notice that mostly local teams return as the cost vs reward is not worth it for traveling teams.

  2. Hey Wendy! Thanks for the post. Regarding the HS teams, is DSHA Divine Savior Holy Angels? If so, that’s a Wisconsin team, not a MN one. We’re pretty particular about a Packers vs. a Vikings state… 🙂
