The HSBC SVNS 2023-2024 series advances to its fifth stop in Los Angeles, CA, where New Zealand secured their first title of this series by triumphing over France 35-19. Notably, this marks the 15th edition of the women’s event in the USA but the first since 2019, held at Infinity Park in Glendale.
In Vancouver, the previous round’s title winners, Ireland and Great Britain, failed to qualify for the Cup quarter-finals, while Brazil and Spain made unexpected appearances. Despite France securing a podium spot, the women’s title went to the resurgent Black Ferns Sevens after Canada claimed bronze. Dispelling any doubts about their prowess, the Black Ferns dominated the pool stage with three straight victories, boasting the highest try-scoring record and a remarkable +101 points difference.
Further down in the results, Australia, the current Series leaders, secured the fourth position. Following closely, USA claimed the fifth spot, while Fiji and Spain secured the sixth and seventh positions, respectively. Brazil landed in eighth place, Ireland in ninth, Japan in tenth, Great Britain in eleventh, and South Africa finished twelfth in the overall standings.
In the overall standings, Australia maintains its lead, but New Zealand has closed the gap to just 6 points. The competition for the critical eighth spot has intensified, with Great Britain holding a slim 6-point lead. It’s worth noting that the four lowest-ranked teams—currently Brazil, Spain, Japan, and South Africa—will participate in a high-stakes promotion and relegation tournament in Madrid on May 31-June 2, alongside the top four teams from the World Rugby HSBC Sevens Challenger 2024.
